First look at Nintendo Labo
So I woke up this morning at about 22:30 in my time with one Intention : to find out what Nintendo is about to unveil…
You see earlier in the evening we got a single screen saying
“Tune in to discover a new Interactive experience for Nintendo Switch that’s specially crafted for kids and those who are young at heart”
All we we’re given to accompany this information was a date and time 17/01/2018 10pm UK time.
My mind started questioning what we could expect. Could it be new games using the IR camera? Could it be some new awkward accessories that would be getting all the wrong attention from Nintendo haters? What kind of experience do they mean and would adults enjoy it too?
Well a few minutes ago they revealed exactly well they delivered what they promise in a weird yet exciting fashion, a crafting experience called Nintendo Labo.
On the trailer above you could see all the weirdness that is literally cardboard and cord… Sounds quite stupid right? But what You are allowed to do with these cardboard pieces is assemble a variety of DIY creations that immerse us to interact with games in a form never seen before…
You can play Piano , Catch a fish, ride a motorcycle, interact with characters inside a house, create a physically moving crawling toy and my favorite one, become a Robot.
According to the official website there are two kits available
Toy-Con 01 VARIETY KIT &
Toy-Con 02 ROBOT KIT
For info on both kits please visit there website, but today I just want to give my opinion on possible future applications of The ROBOT KIT
So the kit allows you to turn your body into a controller for the Nintendo Switch for a game that comes with the kit. You use your four limbs and your head aswell.
If this sounds basic to you think of something else where you use your head and arms , Virtual Reality.
Now I know there are parents for VR and Nintendo of France (I think) recently mentioned that they wouldn’t invest the money in that avenue but I don’t mean VR as in a submersible VR headset where you see yourself in the virtual world. This time I mean playing in the virtual would. As not just a robot but possibly a RPG where instead of buttons we interact with our bodies wearing this albeit ridiculous looking kit. It would still be pretty fun. Walking around for reals 😎, beating up whatever virtual enemies come our way… I won’t say any more on these thoughts of mine I just thought I’d like to mention it so that should it be done in the future I can say “I told you so”.
Anyway. There is also a customization set which comes with some stencil sheets and some stickers which allows you to customise these cardboard accessories.
The most intriguing thing I noticed on the website however was a tiny mention saying “Dream up new ways to use your Toy-Con creations… And bring them to life”. Does this imply that we could build our own Toy-Cons using cardboard and whatever rough ideas we might have? We’ll have to find out soon , hopefully on the next Nintendo Direct.
If you stay near San Francisco or New York City, you could visit the Nintendo Labo Studio which will be in New York City on February 2-3 2018 and in San Francisco on March 2-4 2018. To apply to please visit there website.
